Fun and engaging story.
It's a great "coming of age" story about a 13 year old boy who comes to realize how unfair life is, especially for his parents. In the process of his coming to this realization, he learns about life.

His parents ended up married before they ever finished high school because they had Emmett, the 13 year old boy who is the main character. His dad wanted to always be a pilot but because of getting his girlfriend pregnant at 16, he was never able to; now he lives next to an airfield private airport where small planes are stored. The father loves watching the planes and mowing the airfield's grass because it keeps him close to planes. The owner of the airfield is a drunk prick who only talks down to Emmett's dad, which angers Emmett because he doesn't feel his dad deserves that kind of treatment.

The rich prick gives Emmett's dad an old plane for him to tinker with and Emmett's dad ends up making the old plane purr like a baby kitten, which angers the old prick and he demands taking the plane back. It's essentially only the engine that works but in anger Emmett decides to take the plane. He and his younger sister take off in the plane, flying in about 300 miles away, crash it safely, survive in the woods, become closer because of needing to survive, and are then saved.
It was really quite good!
