Theodor Haltenorth (1910–1981)

Best book on African mammals that I have seen. Distribution maps located on the same page as the species description, and good quality image plates at the back of the book. The only African field guide to include Madagascar. Also has a section on introduced species. The only fault - and some may not consider it a fault - is that it goes into far too much detail for a field guide. It is too much like a zoological reference book.

This fairly comprehensive little guide has proved invaluable over many years.
