The thing saving this book was the last half. The first 100 plus pages were dreadfully slow and dull, but the last 130 or so pages were bangin' good. That is, the portion about New Guinea and Borneo were far, far better than the chapters on the islands in the Torres Straits. Probably, at least in part, because I could relate to them having been to Borneo recently. Also, the descriptive prose was less about activities involving a native name for everything and more about the activities themselves. Bought the book in Penang this past summer and glad I did. Am probably leaning towards getting and reading Hose's book now....
