I really enjoyed this cute story about Salvador who dreams of becoming a bilingual doctor. The story takes place during a doctor's visit where Salvador accompanied his abuela and agrees to help her. His abuela hasn't seen a doctor since she left El Salvador and the medical visit does not go well. The poor care she receives motivates Salvador to takes steps to pursue his dream of a medical career.

I loved how the story addresses the important role of cultural and linguistic competency in providing quality medicine. It sheds light on the importance of people being able to receive medical care in their native language and how miscommunication can lead to disengagement from care. I love that it highlighted how important family support is in Latinx healthcare and how health is a community issue. I also liked that it showed that quality healthcare starts with being able to establish a trusting relationship with a provider who must be educated on the complexities and histories of the cultures they serve and be open to cultural alternatives. An added bonus was that the book is bilingual, in both English and Spanish.

This story was sweet and I loved Salvador's relationship with his abuela. I loved that his family was supportive of his dreams and did not discourage his career path. This is a great book to have in classrooms and healthcare settings to start great conversations about barriers to treatment.
