This an excellent resource for Law Enforcement Officers. Much of their most dangerous work is at night. All currently taught handgun and flashlight techniques are well-illustrated. ( In my opinion, only the FBI Technique is viable – it is the only one that doesn’t providing an aiming point at your center-of-mass.) There is an excellent section on cornering techniques, very well-illustrated.
LEOs have to go into dark areas, where people trying to kill them are hiding, holding a flashlight. If you’re not a cop, don’t do that!
Bringing a flashlight to a gunfight is stupider than bringing a knife to a gunfight. The first person to turn on a light source, visible or infrared, will probably be the first to die. LEOs have to take the risk, others don’t.
If you’re in the military, use passive night vision only. Do not turn on the infrared light. Lay down heavy suppressing fire, toss a grenade in the basement, fire through walls. Hell, call the Air Force.
If you’re a civilian, either go home or wait until dawn. If you’re at home, fight from the dark. Try to have your lighting set up so that intruders can’t turn the lights on behind you, while you can turn on the lights in their area. For example, if you are upstairs, you should be able to turn on the lights downstairs, but not the other way around.
In this situation, make sure you know who you are trying to kill. You may think all the kids are upstairs asleep, but the silhouetted asshole stumbling around downstairs could be your drunk sixteen-year old try to sneak back in. And don’t shoot at sounds: you might kill the family pet.
