Alfred Gollin (1926–2005)

2254 Proconsul in Politics: a study of Lord Milner in Opposition and in Power, by A. M. Gollin (read 6 Dec 1989) This is a 1964 book about Lord Alfred Milner. It is not a biography, but tells of Milner's political life from 1905 (after his South African work is over) till his death on 13 May 1925. Milner ran in 1895 for a seat in the House of Commons, but lost. He then went into government service, and after the great Liberal victory in 1906 was out of power till Lloyd George brought him into his Government in 1917. This book deals with a period in British parliamentary history I am much interested in, and I found it very good reading. Milner was very pro-Ulster in 1913-1914 (worse that Carson!) and quite disgusted with democracy. He did a good job in World War I, when he was given power in the Lloyd George government.
