"A Table Against Mine Enemies" by Larry M. Goldstein is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that explores the complex and often fraught relationship between Jews and Arabs in Israel. The book provides a nuanced and balanced portrayal of the conflict, offering insights into the perspectives and experiences of both sides.
The novel is set in Jerusalem in the 1960s, and the story follows the lives of several characters from both Jewish and Arab backgrounds. The characters are well-developed and engaging, and the author does an excellent job of bringing their experiences and perspectives to life on the page.
One of the book's standout features is its focus on the humanity of all the characters, regardless of their background or beliefs. The author does not shy away from the difficult and painful aspects of the conflict, but he also highlights the moments of connection and understanding between characters from different backgrounds.
The book also provides valuable insights into the history and politics of the conflict, without ever feeling didactic or preachy. The author's writing style is engaging and immersive, and he weaves together a complex and multi-layered story that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end.
Overall, "A Table Against Mine Enemies" is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that offers a nuanced and balanced portrayal of the conflict between Jews and Arabs in Israel. The book is well-written, engaging, and provides valuable insights into the perspectives and experiences of both sides. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the complex and fraught history of the Middle East.

Many of the events cited in the book were not big media stories here in the US and it shows off the diplomatic complexity of problems that may be unsolvable. When Israel does use a heavy hand, we certainly hear about it and their enemies get whatever mileage they can by trumpeting their grievances. There would be more such stories, though, if Israel wasn't making efforts to resolve (or inhibit) conflict through alternate means.… (más)
