Companion to the excellent "Smalltalk-80 : The Language and Its Implementation" by Goldberg and Robson, it's a guide to a past time, when rich programming environments existed for the more sophisticated languages. Remember, when this was written, most computer systems didn't have a mouse, nor any concept of one. Interactive computing was just getting a start, and many systems were still programmed with punched card decks (and some even with paper tape).

It was an excellent book for that system. It seems archaic now, and yet I'd still like to have that environment to program in.

Ah, Smalltalk, that sweet, elegant language. It's amazing to realize how very LONG ago this was, and to know that it (and a few others, such as C, LISP, and yes, FORTRAN) lives on, in daily use, here and there. This book is an example of how to write technical information. It's clear, concise, and never descends to cute or clever to make a point. Clarity is best.

An earlier version of smalltalk. Looks like it will be a good read

A classic computer programming book that defines good technical writing. While the language itself is now a cult item and largely obsolete, this book is still valuable to read for its insights into how to design and build computer languages, as well as its clarity of style.
