Judo is increasingly opopular as a spoort throughout the Western world. As an Olympic sport it is fiercely competitive, physically demanding and technically exacting. George Glass, a former British international player, won the British Open Lightweight Championship four times and was for many years a British Team Member. He trained at many outstanding players, and there took principal responsibility for his own technical development. Drawing on this considerable background, he gives personal advice on the development and performance of a wide variety of throwing techniques, the criteria a player should hold when developng a throwing repertoire, and much more that is invaluable to the judo player wishing to improve his competitive ability. The introduction of weight categories to competitive judo brought an added dimension to the judo player's training programme: weight control-an area mostly ignored in recent judo teaxbooks. George Glass rectifies this in thefinal chapter, considring some of the scientific information available to gaining and losing weight, and offering practical advice-an approach unique in a judo book and invaluable not only to competitive judo players but also to coaches wishing to increase their knowledge of the game.
