Hnnngh, morphosyntax. I feel like this is well-done work, and it's not like I've got zero exposure to the field, but god syntax can be forbidding stuff. This is even well-written--it's just the theoretical bar to entry is so high. It's about trying to break down the specific features of compounds of various kinds across languages: subordinating (love story, a story about love), attributive–appositive (keyword, which in being a word is a key/being a key is a word), and coordinating (Austria–Hungary, an Austria that is, separately, a Hungary). They fit together many different ways, and the crosslinguistic thing gets to matters I've wondered about before, like how specifically do speakers of the highly isolating (analytic) language Chinese, in which words tend to be modified by other words and not by affixes, tell a compound word from a noun phrase? And I feel like I learned a few things, but all in all the answers are hard, hard to derive. Rivista di Linguistica.… (más)
