Annette Gero

This is a most interesting book and particularly the section on waggas. The wagga tradition is one that doesn't appear to have happened in New Zealand. Maybe swaggers didn't want to use a blanket stuffed with other fabrics which could easily get damp in the NZ climate which is very different from Australia's.

Giving some of the history of the makers is a really useful addition except where the text and the captions are repeated.

Gero's book is really well illustrated and reflects the existence of quilts in Australia and in Australian public collections. Pamela Fitz Gerald's book 'Warm Heritage' on NZ quilts and their makers is in a different league. Gero includes a number of men who have made quilts whereas Fitz Gerald only covers quilts made by women. Have any men made quilts in NZ?

She also acknowledges the work done by Murray Walker in being 'the first person to exhibit and document old Australian quilts and coverlets in a serious and aesthetic way.' p.234.… (más)
