A thorough, well-written, and extremely well-researched biography of one of America’s great writers. Geltner both knew and interviewed Crews and a lot of others for the book, and it shows. He expands on the early hardship that Crews wrote about in A Childhood: The Biography of a Place, Crews’ early struggles with getting published, eventual success, and the alcoholism that stunted Crews’ career and eventually contributed to his failing health. Geltner emphasizes Crews’ undying drive to create meaningful fiction – and not just fiction – and his devotion to writing and writers in general. Maybe the best biography I’ve read.
