Kathy Geary Anderson

Let’s be honest, I did not start out this novel with high hopes. I wasn’t really feeling this particular genre when I picked up the novel, but I instantly forgot my misgivings, and literally devoured this novel, reading it in one day.

Anna has been running from an abusive husband for years. Donning disguises, and doing everything she can to stay on the radar and to keep her, her young daughter, and herself safe. When she thinks that he is dead she again runs and finds herself again caring for a patient that she had previously tended to while working as a nurse and she goes from a bustling metropolis to a remote back country, the perfect hiding place. To make things even more complicated Anna tells everyone that her and Jackson are married. Being the gentleman he is, Jackson agrees to play along, until she can figure out her next course of action.

Jackson is a good man with a beautiful soul and a wonderful family, with the exception of his father. Bitter about his wife leaving him, this man is a beast when it comes to the female gender, to which I very much got Beast, of the Beauty and the Beast persuasion, vibes. The “beauty” to his said Beast is Sikes, his long-time business partner and best friend. I adored Sikes so much! He is a soothing balm, especially at the beginning of the story.

Jackson and Anna are the sweetest together! They have such a wonderful vibe, like they were always meant to be together, and the tender moments they share are truly swoon-worthy.

The entire novel itself has a wonderful, homey flow that I am so here for. Yes, there are a few tough subjects tackled, like the abuse that Anna endured at the hands of her husband, but they are handled with care and respect, showing that victims can become survivors, and that forgiveness can happen, no matter how bleak the situation. I myself am an abuse survivor and can attest to many of the issues that arise when you are an abused woman, and truly appreciated how these subjects were handled.

I was a little more than surprised with how much I loved this novel. Kathy Geary Anderson is a true artist with her words, painting such vivid images, giving her characters such immense depth, and tugging at the readers heart and imagination like no other. I cannot recommend this novel enough!
