Mandarin squares, the embroidered insignia found on the robes of the ruling mandarin class in China's Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), are prized collectors' pieces. This volume provides a lucid account of the mandarin system of government and methods of selecting mandarins. Richly illustrated, the volume traces the origin and development of mandarin squares, and describes the symbolism and embroidery techniques of the insignia.

Excellent book. Clear, organized, differentiates between Manchu dress and Han dress; court, formal, semi-formal, informal dress; clothing worn by lower economic classes; men's, women's, and children's, and who wore what for what occasions. Excellent illustrations. The index is supplemented by an excellent glossary.

I would have liked to know more about some of the old photos, or whether that info was even available, but that is not germane to the subject of the book.

Little more than a small dictionary of pieces of costumes worn in China. Not much use except as a starting point for serious research.
