I'm not sure that I'd repeat the recommendation. Our heroine, Coraline, takes a job as governess to a teenage boy who invents lots of machines in his spare time. At night she has strange dreams which always seem to end with her clothes falling off. The end of the second volume reveals What Is Really Going On, and I have to say that it makes no sense at all in terms of what we have been told of the story. Also notable that the titles of the volumes are the wrong way around - vol 1's title is "Celia", but she is the sister of Coraline, the main character, and not otherwise mentioned until halfway through vol 2. The art is lush and gorgeous, but basically it's two short books about boobs.

A 'governess' arrives at a mysterious mansion. She attends to her eccentric master, a young boy inventor. At night she dreams fantastic and erotic dreams. Beautifully drawn but the plot is weak.

Turn of the century, almost-steampunk erotic fairy tale with gorgeous and sexy artwork by Terry Dodson. The story is odd and not very engaging, but it's secondary to Dodson's stunning art. He certainly knows how to draw the female form......

As a collector I've made it my mission to try and collect pretty much all the graphic novels published by Humanoids in English. Humanoids (or Les Humanoïdes Associés to give it its proper name) is a French publishing house founded in the 1970s and has published a variety of comics, mostly by European creators of every conceivable genre and variety. You never know exactly what you are going to get when you pick one up, though if there is one thing that is almost universally constant it is that the art is usually outstanding.

And that is the case here. The story also is an interesting one - a series of gruesome murders of eminent psychologists in 1920s USA being investigated by one John Lord and his lady sidekick. And herein lies the biggest problem with this comic - the characters. John Lord is supposed to be some hotshot hardboiled detective. The lady sidekick (whose name I can not currently recall) is supposed to be his boss but is basically there for him to have someone to explain things to and show up all the time. Its a character dynamic that becomes a little irritating - the know-it-all guy explaining everything (and even ordering around) his female boss who is apparently a little out of her depth. Neither character seems to acquire much depth either. Maybe something is lost in translation from the original french but much of the dialogue seems to be exposition and thus somewhat stilted. The origin story of the serial killer too is very gruesome, and is told in short, often wordless, flashbacks that involve (SPOILER ALERT!) a mutiny on a ship, murder, rape, a shipwreck and cannibalism.

In other words not everyone's cup of tea.

In post WWI New York, the Unlimited Private Investigators (UPI), under the auspices of the Mayor's office, reforms to investigate a series of brutal murders. The only surviving member of the original incarnation joins the new group's leader Clara Summers for an investigation that involves piracy, a deserted island, a jungle woman, love, revenge and other diverse topics. Reminiscent of Torchwood, writer Filippi and artist Laumond craft compelling dual storylines that perfectly illustrate the eras and conflict. The tales culminate in a telegraphed though satisfactory conclusion.

Une série sur 3 albums qui ne m'a pas convaincu. En 1918, John Lord est un ancien agent d'un service de police, l'UPI, spécialisé pour traiter les cas de psychiatrie. Il reprend du service suite à la mort horrible de son ancien responsable et mentor, le professeur Winkley. Il doit mener l'enquête accolé d'une collaboratrice, nommée responsable du service UPI, Clara Summers. Cette dernière à beaucoup de mal à s'adapter aux méthodes d'investigations de John Lord celui-ci étant persuadé qu'un certain nombre d'ancien crimes non élucidés ont un rapport avec le meurtre du professeur Winkley. Petit à petit, ils découvriront l'histoire tragique d'une jeune-fille traumatisée Marie, ayant débutée 30 ans auparavant suite au piratage d'un bateau d'immigrant voulant rejoindre les Etats-Unis, celle-ci internée aura un enfant, Karen. L'histoire impliquant des psychiatres et médecins gérant des hôpitaux psychiatriques.
Les auteurs ont eu une idée géniale de présenter l'époque du drame et l'histoire de Marie uniquement par le dessin sans aucune parole. Ces périodes venant en contraste avec les pages de l'enquête. L'histoire avance ainsi par des allers-retour entre l'enquête et les évènements qui se sont déroulés auparavant.
Le premier album est pour cela assez saisissant. La violence extrême et l'horreur des situations est parfaitement rendu par ces visages sans voies, exprimant la terreur que par leur regard et l'attitude de leur corps. Les pages concernant l'enquête avec des vignettes plus petites, des dialogues sont mêlées à des plans magnifiques de New-York. On passe de plan large à un resserrement de l'action avec des effets de zoom en trois vignettes. Des dessins à l'aquarelle somptueux. Des raccourcis techniques pour exprimer la vitesse de l'action en mettant sur une même vignette un personnage dans plusieurs moment, comme une décomposition du mouvement.
Le second album garde cette tension entre l'avancement de l'enquête et la découverte, la compréhension par petite touche du drame qui s'est déroulé auparavant. John Lord et Clara Summers n'arrêtent de se chamailler dans une relation chaud-froid et pas mal d'humour. Malheureusement cette tension tombe petit à petit. La beauté des images et des dessins est contre balancée par des vignettes dont je n'ai pas compris la structure, j'y ai vu des dessins bâclés. Et enfin, la chute du tome 3 est assez décevante.
Une série qui mérite d'être lu pour le deux premiers volumes et surtout pour un dessin magnifique, surtout les vues de New-York.
