This book talks about how the narrators brother, Sammy, is different. It's repetitious on each page saying what Sammy does different and the mother letting the narrator know it's because he's special. Then the narrator wishing his brother could do what him and his friends are doing. He gets increasing frustrated with his brother and talks about how it isn't easy having a special brother. When Sammy knocks down his block tower, he gets so upset that he rants on about how he doesn't want a special brother and how he wants someone to do normal things with. He ends up seeing how being different isn't bad and it can be fun when they both build and knock down towers. I like how in this book, the narrator does the things Sammy likes doing. He didn't think they were fun or made sense but when he actually tried it with his brother, he saw how it's fun in a different way. "Don't knock it 'til you try it" is a phrase I'd use for this book.½

This story is about a boy with a younger brother with autism. The older brother wishes his younger brother wasn't so different. In the end the moral of the story is even though the boys little brother is special to him, to his brother with autism he is special. So the differences brought them together and built there bond stronger. Age 4+ source Pierce library.

I enjoyed the book. It describes the perspective of children with siblings who have disabilities and some emotions they may struggle with. I also like that the author gives a solution for children with disabilities and their siblings to come together with little issues. The pictures in the book are a bit hazy and it makes me feel that the older sibling is a bit unsure of the issues that his brother faces.

A little boy is upset and frustrated with his brother. He wants his brother to do certain things with him, but he doesn't because he's a "special brother". The special brother knocks down his tower and he gets angry and says he doesn't want to have a special brother. Then his brother calls him the special brother, and from that moment on, he tries to do more things with his special brother.

Sammy's brother wonders why Sammy can't go to school with him, doesn't play with his friends, or smash block towers instead of building towers. Their mom says it's because Sammy is special.
One day Sammy's brother is proud of a tower of blocks he has built, but Sammy runs into the room and knocks the tower down. Out of anger, Sammy's brother shouts that he wants s brother who can go to school with him, plays with his friends and doesn't smash block towers. He wants a brother that not special. Sammy points and says, special brother. Sammy's brother and his mom begin to make small adjustments in the way they spend their time in order to maintain Sammy and his brother's relationship.

The book has an accurate description of a child with autism. The story itself doesn't feel outdated but the use of the word special that the mom uses in reference to Sammy seems outdated. I still believe the book can be useful to help a young child find ways they can connect with a sibling who is disabled.

This beautifully illustrated book shares the story of two brothers, an older brother who has what's considered a neuro-typical brain and a younger brother who has autism. At first, the older brother feels angry and upset about his brother's differences. He doesn't seem to understand why his younger brother doesn't play the way he does. Eventually, the older brother realizes that his younger brother's ways are not wrong, they're just different than his, and that's okay.

Sammy does not go to school with his older brother—Sammy has to go to school on a special bus. The brothers cannot play in the park together—Sammy lies under the tree and watches the leaves. Sammy’s brother is angry because Sammy is autistic and does not know how to be a “normal” brother. Then, one day, Sammy’s older brother realizes that he should not demand everything on his own terms and that Sammy’s way of doing things may not be so bad after all.

I liked this book for the characters and the writing. The characters can be relatable to readers. The story can be related to students who have a sibling or a friend with special needs. It will help those readers work through their feeling and help them understand. The writing is organized by situations and how it makes the brother feels. For example Sammy doesn't go to school with his brother and it makes him sad because he wants Sammy to ride the bus with him. The message of this story is that your feelings are okay to express and you can get upset.
