Arundhati Roy’s novel The God of Small Things had an enormous impact and resonance. R.K. Dhawan, editor of The Commonwealth Review and reader in English at the University of Delhi, gathered a number of essays under headings among them: ‘The Woman’s Question’, ‘Exploring India’s Past and Present’, ‘Thematic Variations’, ‘Architecture’ ‘Language’, …

I read only a few of these essays: on the symbolism of Roses and Rivers: here Rama Nair says rightly that „the world created in fiction engenders a comprehension of a deeper reality within the ‘real’ world we live“. Then on ‘Language dancing’: Arundhati Roy’s extraordinary play with the English language, on Colonial History and contemporary Social Dynamics, …; perhaps I will read others but I have an intuitive reluctance against over-analysation: in gaining something you may loose something else as well.

I didn’t buy this book, it was a present from the British Library at a time when generosity still existed (I assume that they had no use for it as it is not published in Britain). (VII-18)
