A quick look at 18 dog breeds. Each entry is narrated by a dog of that breed, and it goes for a lively tone but falls a little short, so it still just feels like reading an encyclopedia. Each dog goes through the same points, so it gets very repetitive and is probably best read in little doses.

To encourage childhood journaling this book of colorful, lined pages has writing prompts throughout as well as pictures of dogs on each page making little jokes or sharing dog breed trivia. There's not much to it, obviously, but it did get my daughter to print out her thoughts a few times around the age of ten.

The book is narrated by an annoying spoiled princess -- a Pekingese dog -- who shares how to be an arrogant snob at school. There's a half-hearted attempt to make her less awful at the end as she condescends to make friends and influence people . . . through bribery and flattery.

Um, no.

I actually liked the first half of the book as we meet a timid and anxious Pug who is taken to an obedience training class to help him get over his reluctance to face the scary world. He is immediately terrified of a pit bull he meets there but slowly learns to see past stereotypes to find that appearance doesn't dictate who might be a friend and who might be a bully.

Unfortunately, the hijinks around a final obstacle course competition are just too cheesy and groan inducing for me to tolerate.

Sitting in the DMV with my daughter so she can get a new ID card, and this little book barely made a dent in the wait time.

A stray dog from the city finds itself auditioning to be a sheepdog on a desert ranch with a bully old ewe and lurking wolves. It's a fairly bland adventure, though I was a little perturbed by "the old crazy act" used twice to ward off troublemakers.

In this twist on The Prince and the Pauper, a Cocker Spaniel from a poor household in Los Angeles swaps places with a movie star dog who is tired of show business.

It's sort of fair as children books go, but the happy ending overload for every plot strand is just too forced and far-fetched.

Basically a fun little book of dog and cat trivia. It could have actually used a little more smack talk between the two species, but the two sides of the flip book put the emphasis on "Rule" over the "Drool."

But I do want to point out that the publisher has obviously signaled their preference by putting the barcode on the cat side of the flip book, making it the BACK cover.

Dogs rule!

A shy Dalmatian sneaks away from the yard of his quiet, elderly owner repeatedly as he becomes fixated on an instinctual drive to rescue people from fires and seek out fire trucks.

Intriguingly odd but it couldn't quite hold my interest. It's illustrated with the Artlist Collection's signature snout-focused dog photographs, but they are stock photos from A.I.'s image library of several different Dalmatians, and some photos are repeated unnecessarily, so no matter how cute they don't add much to the story.

My 4-year-old Batman and Lego obsessed son would probably give this a 5. I gave it a 4 for having some great advice about honestly being a cool person. I was surprised and pleased.

This book is about the anatomy and basic information regarding a dog's body. I t gives information to simple structures in the body and also differences in other animals.

This book is a good book for students to help learn about science and life forms of animals surrounding them. It may also help students learn a better way to take care of a pet.

I would relate this to the classroom by putting pictures on the board and asking the students to tell me the difference between two different animals. This way they could learn more different animal body types and also science at the same time.
