Some of the things Dean is saying make a lot of sense. Other things he is saying sound like the manifesto of a survivalist militia.

There is a special flavour of victim mentality, that seems to be more visible in the USA than in many European countries. The thinking seems to be that "I'll make sure you are more afraid of me than I am afraid of you". I have lived in major cities only for minor part of my life; most of my experience is of the countryside. This may colour my perceptions, not having been exposed to the cruel realities of the kind of society that Dean is writing about.

All self-help books suffer from one problem: they assume that all people are pretty much similar. If you are not the kind of person that a given self-help book is written for, then it just doesn't work, although you may be able to find some techniques to assist in your life. Then again if you are in the target demographic, you will be enthusiastic about how the book describes your life and fits everything.

Michael Dean makes me think. I always like that in an author. I don't always agree with him. He agrees that that is permissible. Not bad, overall.

If you feel like you have a basic grasp on filmmaking, and have been using equipment better than a Sony Handicam, do yourself a favor and skip this book. Or, if you can find a copy at a drastically-slashed price ("$10 Film School", anyone?), pick it up for a quick read, refresher, or reference manual.

Michael Dean does love himself. That much is true. In order to put togehter a book like this, you might. He describes some of the basics and kind of provides a lot of narratives about how he made some films. Good basic introduction to the process of making films, but don't consider it the beginning and end of the process.
