Raised as a child of missionaries in China, Dore has a deep love for Chinese culture and art. Although circumstances prevent her dream of living in China as an adult, she nevertheless lived a rich life with abundant friends, meaningful work and amazing inner strength in overcoming adverse life experiences. She knew how to embrace the times of joy when she found them.

Dore's daughter, Judith March Davis, discovers a wealth of letters (written from her mother to her aunt) and weaves together the story of a strong woman who finds love, purpose and meaning in a life that also takes many unexpected turns. Dore fights TB, diabetes, depression, fear of growing old, financial troubles, alcoholism and loneliness. She knew her own mind and heart. She was not one to compromise her ideas or goals. Some battles she won; some were lost with her acceptance that it was all part of a larger picture that she could not see.

This story is a look into the soul of a unique woman. Recommended.
