Limericks first appeared in England around 1820 as a party game. Drinking was involved. The present book was inspired by a therapist who advanced the thesis that "the greatest contribution to human health and sanity in the last two hundred years is neither penicillin nor indoor plumbing, but rather the limerick".

The editors of this collection present enduring limericks, indifferent to the identity of authors. "They are bold and explicit, but with a strong element of humor"...

"The limerick is good for everyone. Take one every few hours as needed."

There was a young lady of Arden,
The tool of whose swain wouldn't harden.

During my days as a plumber, this was a favorite:

There was a young plumber of Leigh
Who was plumbing a girl by the sea.
She said, "Stop your plumbing,
There's somebody coming!"
Said the plumber, still plumbing, "It's me!"
