First sentence: Where are you going, Rex? I am going swimming. Come with me. Will we be cold? It is a hot day.

Premise/plot: Rex, a warthog, "teaches" his (oh-so-reluctant) friend, Oslo, an oxpecker, how to swim. Oslo has zero interest in learning to swim. NONE. Rex thinks Oslo should want to learn to swim. He's just as insistent as Oslo is resistant. Will Oslo learn to swim?

My thoughts: I was underwhelmed. Granted I am not the intended audience for this one. Granted I overthink things. The over-thinker in me is like why does Oslo *need* to learn how to swim? Why does it matter so much to Rex that Oslo learns to swim just so they can swim together in the future? Like isn't Rex being just a little too pushy if he's a good friend? Why should Oslo have to do something just because his friend wants him too. Isn't this just peer pressure? But I overthink things apparently.

Another approach to the learning of the ABCs.
Detective McGroom solves the mystery of a very sneaky thief. There are clues in the alphabet and the illustrations that children may try to find and beat the detective.

Disappointing. Space cats, sounds great, right? But so stereotyped and not particularly fun.

This book is about the alphabet and solving a mystery. The author uses rhyming words, and for each page of the book, a new letter is shown, and that letter is bolded and colored. This book can be used as a mentor text because the students will be able to identify words that start with each letter of the alphabet.

Although I normally don't gravitate toward black and white books, this one captured my attention because it reminded me of those old detective mysteries from the 1930s. The mood of the book is comical with puns on almost every page. Although I found this book to be cute, I just didn't love who the antagonist of the story. I suppose for my k-3 students the ending would come as shocking, but I felt it lacked originality.½

HILAROUS children's book! Humphrey Bogart-ish...DH & I were laughing but the kids didn't quite get it.

"The ABC Mystery" by Doug Cushman is an alphabet mystery book. Each letter contains something about a mystery because someone stole the art work. They use the ABC's as different mystery words up until they find the thief of the art. This book is another example of how I want to do my children's book with the different rhymes that go from letter to letter.

On Christmas Eve everyone needs to go to bed, but how do the snowmen, polar bears and others in the North Pole say good night? This is a perfect bedtime story for Christmas Eve. The simple rhyming text and colorful illustrations are sure to be enjoyed by everyone.

Poems starring Pigs portraying classic horror movies. I laughed at the creative thoughts like Frankenswine and Porker from the Black Lagoon. I wonder if my students would think it as cute and funny if they had never heard of the B rated horror movies from the poems. None the less the poems are funny and the illustrations match the poems perfectly.

Uses: I would maybe have this available to use for reading groups, but I think I would lean toward having something a little more interesting to read than a phonetically regular book.
Medium: watercolor and ink

I think this book would be excellent to use in book boxes. There is a lot of repetition and pattern in the words, and I think the story is something students could relate to. The book is very cute and the pictures are interesting and engaging.

Valentine Mice is about a group of four mice who go out of their way to deliver valentines to the forest. In the forest they deliver valentines to other animals like a moose, the squirrels, a bunny, and some beavers. In the process, they lose a mouse, but then they find him buried in the snow. The illustrations are very vibrant and upbeat. There aren’t a lot of words in the story, so this could be a useful book for children to read through the language experience approach (Leeland, Lewison, & Harste, 2013, p. 50). The children can read the story and then retell it to someone in their own words, because the book is simple enough to follow. Could be recommended for a Valentine’s Day book in the classroom, or at home.
