This may well be one of the most depressing books that I've read in a long time as it sheds light on one of the great blights of our day -- the enslavement of some 27 million souls worldwide in various forms of degrading and dehumanizing servitude. The authors focus on Sudan, Uganda, Burma, and also India where even young children are captured or given over to serve the base desires and greed of foul examples of the human race. Although it may be impossible to entirely eradicate this great evil, the authors do give heartening examples of individual rescues and hold out hope that significant gains may be accomplished if international awareness and outrage combine as in the campaign against apartheid. It also stands out clearly by implication that as the West abandons the Christian worldview which motivated William Wilberforce and other abolitionists, the problem will grow along with the ascendancy of Islam and other foreign ideologies within our own borders.… (más)

In The Very Stones Cry Out Baroness Cox and Benedict Rogers chronicle the very real and too-often ignored persecution of Christians in seventeen countries around the world ranging from China and Vietnam to Iran and Cuba. Each chapter tells of untold hardship and suffering for the Gospel but at the same time tells of such hope: there are many stories of men and women who remain faithful to the Gospel even in the face of imprisonment, torture, and death.

Cox and Rogers enable Christians in the West, where the threat of real persecution is often non-existent, to learn so much from their suffering brothers and sisters and to draw strength from that. Also, it encourages them to pray and to contact their political representatives and church leaders to actively do more to be a voice for the voiceless.… (más)

This book is written by two notable advocates for human rights. In the first part of their book, they examine the extend and effects of slavery in Sudan, Uganda and Burma. The authors have provided some horrific quotes from people, some of whom who are children, who have escaped from slavery in these countries. In the second section of the book, the authors provide a history and discussion of the types of slavery and how modern slavery is justified. While this book is not particularly aimed at the Christian audience, it challenges the reader to advocate for the abolition of slavery and provides some suggestions on how to do this.… (más)

This book lays out in a very precise way the current state of modern slavery. A heartbreaking & infuriating read: Heartbreaking because of the terrible toll on the lives of those with no one to speak for them; infuriating because the world as a whole is looking the other way. Highly recommend as a concise & factual look at today's slavery problem.
