As with most visual dictionaries, this is limited in its coverage of abstract nouns and other word classes, but it is a good reference for concrete nouns. It is well illustrated, with coloured drawings throughout and lists of the words in each of the five languages for each thing illustrated. For the languages other than English, the gender is shown but no other information (e.g. how to form plurals). There are indexes of all the words illustrated in each language, which is handy if you want to look up something specific, but I find this book works best for browsing and I would probably tend to reach for one of my more traditional dictionaries if I wanted to look up a particular word.

5000 French (and English) words with colorful and instructive diagrams. The book covers a wide variety of techology and science areas. Too much to memorize in a reading, but provides either a nice reference and/or provides some familiarity.

The highly realistic illustrations are graphically precise, and the terminology used is to the proper level of specialization, making this book an excellent reference tool. It is easy to consult and can be used in several ways; by going from an idea to a word; by going from a word to an idea; and for sheer pleasure. This would be a wonderful resource for visual learners, those learning English as a second language or any learner acquiring new vocabulary.½

This is a very good book to use in lower levels of French Language acquisition as it shows the constellation of vocabulary words that surround any activity. Nice pictures as well.

Oh how I enjoy this book. It is so detailed that I learn English while I learn Spanish, French, German and Italian words since the examples are so pointed - maritime transport, for instance, has all the parts of a ferry diagrammed, so that I know that it is called the compass bridge in English, the Pelldeck in German, etc. I think children might find this as irresistible as I do and would happily pass some time on a rainy afternoon, looking at 10 different seaweeds, or the insides of a dishwasher, or how electricity is produced from geothermal energy or all the cuts of gems or fencing equipment. You get the picture. The drawings are crisp, there is a good index and it really covers everything.

What do you do when you’re cleaning out the kitchen “junk drawer”, and you find something and have no idea what it is? This book will tell you. A reverse dictionary! Instead of looking up a word and finding a description and sometimes a picture, this book has you do the opposite. Look up a picture and find out the name of the object.

You name it, this book has it. From clothing to tools, from vegetables to clothing, items are listed as to what type and then broken down into styles. Find out what the inside of a ship or locomotive looks like. See how a house is constructed and even what the inside of a castle is like. This book is fun to read when you don’t need an answer.

No one should be without this book in his or her home library.

Want to know what goes into making a sea buoy? This book shows and tells you. How about all the iteems needed in an office - desks, filing cabinets, clipboards, archboards. Don't forget the credenza or the coat rack. I could not live without this book.

This is the "Multilingual Edition" (English, Spanish, French, German). Soon after I bought this book, I realized that the same editors came up with "The Firefly Five-Language Visual Dictionary" (0-02-578115-4). Both books use the same set of digital images. It appears that the images either originally came from, or ended up at this
Canadian site, which licences them:

Even though there are a few pages in this 4-language edition that are not in the 5-language edition, I highly recommend that you pick the latter. Besides offering another language (Italian), it has a large number of new images (25,000 terms in this one, 35,000 in the Firefly).
Strangely, the list price for this volume is higher than that of the Firefly. Steer clear (unless the price is right)!
