If you are interested in the Hamilton/Burr duel-choose another title. The author may have misled people in putting duel in the title, but I won't quibble with much else. Enjoyable to see how a homicide was "investigated" ( practically not at all) and prosecuted in the days of early America. Sme folks complained that there was not enough to get a sense of the characters, but, considering how long ago it was and how little would remain of your average citizen- I thought he did a great job

true crime is my guilty secret-but when it is well done, it is as good as any fiction. This was really well done. You get a sense of the time, the society, the role that newspapers played in making the news instead of just reporting it. Really enjoyed

While doing research for a class one of the SFPL librarians mentioned that this book might be helpful. The title sounded familiar, but it wasn't until she brought over the book that the lightening hit: the author was Paul S. Collins. His book "Sixpence House" is wonderful (feel free to check my review), and in that book he actually mentions working on this book. How perfect that my schoolwork connected me to it!

Anyway, the book is great. Some of the stories are less interesting than others, but even so the writing is brilliant throughout. Bonus: one of the stories describes a specific location in San Francisco, and using Google Maps Street View you can actually see what he's talking about.

This is the book I wish I had written. There is a specific plot - moving from San Francisco to Hay-on-Wye - but there are a lot of tangents that are all about books books books, which to me is great great great. This is now in my top favorite books.
