Received a copy on Netgalley for review.

This book had real potential. It began interestingly. The main character's voice was different than what I usually come across and the idea of an evil sect who takes over the world and can only be defeated by a sort of prophetical figure who has yet to show up is interesting. I also enjoyed the ending. We don't get to see the world be freed, but we know that it will happen or at least we think so since we never actually see it with out own eyes. The story ending with the departure of that main character and the end of his quest rather than the more traditional end of tyranny is an intriguing touch.

That aside, I find the middle of the book lacking. Especially after maybe part 2, everything seems somehow rushed. And turned quite cliche. That was somewhat expected as the story is a "myth" and myths tend to be quite fantastical and where well known tropes will appear, but that's still no excuse for that rather mute attempt in this book. I wanted something a bit less outlandish. Myths aren't necessarily truth, but everything seemed so wild and haphazard in terms of author direction and planning as though there was some rush to finish the story, even if it wasn't the most satisfying.

Quick Summary: Hugh Fogg’s spirit has been hanging around since 1615 in an effort to defeat the evil group that runs the world beginning with the education of students at the exclusive school on Stauros Island.

What I liked: I enjoyed the connections between Hugh and the other characters, both living and dead. The author weaves mystery and fantasy with paranormal, and adventure. I also liked the atmosphere of the island and the descriptions of the island. I really enjoyed the ending.

What I did not like: The beginning of the story confused me a little. It took a couple of chapters before I understood what was going on, and occasionally I had to re-read a page or two to make sure I was still on track. The action was good, but not intense.

The bottom line: I think that this will be a enjoyable for boys who enjoy mythology type books even though this is not based on Greek or Roman mythology.

Status in my library: I will put this on my list because I have many students who enjoy mythological, paranormal, and fantasy oriented books.
