E. Fox (Parent Council Volume 4)
Women's contributions to the history of the United States are beginning to be recognized. Interest in women's studies has spawned a plethora of books about how women have aided in the making of this nation; some have been good, most have been bad. Fortunately for young readers, boy and girl alike, Ina Chang has created a jewel of a book about Civil War women. Her accounts of the exploits of Harriet Tubman, Angelina Grimke, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and lesser known woman are straightforward, full of relevant information, and nicely interspersed with photographs and illustrated scenes. This book succeeds in revealing some of the vital roles women have played in American history. Part of the "Young Readers' History of the Civil War" series. 1996, Puffin Books, $6.99. Ages 10 to 12. Awards: Utah Children's Book Awards 1994
