A quick read if not a particularly enlightening one. Spending a couple hours in the company of The Lady Chablis was entertaining, but the book is more about her flamboyant lifestyle than the underlying gender identity issues. Also worth noting is that the book is about 20 years old, and was most likely written mainly for its pot-boiling potential. The Doll has not had an easy or particularly prosperous existence, at least up to the time of this publication. 3 stars for sass and some fine photos of her righteous self. (Review written in March of 2016. Note The Lady Chablis passed away in September of 2016.)

I've had the book on my shelf for a while and finally decided to read it and am glad I did. Her personality just came out of the pages.

Bah, humbug....another famous queen, and a nasty one at that!

I liked her better as one of the players in the book " Midnight In the Garden of Good & Evil". In her/his own biography, well it's just too much.

"Chablis is a full-time transvestite. In clinical terms, she is a preoperative transsexual," John Berendt explains in his introduction. Chablis takes it from there, presenting a sassy, tongue-in-cheek version of her life story, which she began as Benjamin Edward Knox in 1957.

I couldn't stop laughing. Certainly not the most classic of works but I enjoyed it as much if not more. The vulgarity teamed with that southern charm made this book a guilty pleasure for me.

Wonderful book of how the Lady Chablis came to life. Is a great companion to Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil. Has also given me a few more places I need to visit when we travel to Savannah, GA again.
