The artwork was great. The story.. not so much. It felt like the writer was trying to fit a whole action movie into a few pages. Trying to evoke pathos in such an abbreviated way doesn't work.

I really liked the artwork. However, at times I was wondering what I was reading because there didn't seem to be much of a plot.

Set in a very Dystopian (one might say over-the-top Dystopian) future Italy it had a very strange Japanese feeling over it. Partly this might have to do with the manga-like art style, but everything else also felt more Japanese than Italian (clothes and the like). It was distracting for me as I kept wondering why future Italy looked so much like Japan.

Like I said, the plot was somewhat lacking and really fell quite flat amidst all the Dystopian tragedy happening around the main character. While the artwork saved some of the story, I can not say that I loved it.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Golem by Lorenzo Ceccotti is an enjoyable story with some exceptional artwork. I like to read a graphic novel through first paying enough attention to the drawings to follow the story. Often it is the second time through when I determine my real level of satisfaction whether it is because of subtleties within the artwork or the synthesis of the story and a detailed appreciation of the art. This book definitely made my second time through rewarding on every count.

The story is not particularly complicated which is probably a positive thing. Things are pretty straightforward and develop quickly. Scenes in the background of many frames help to drive home the point about how the society has developed.

In addition to readers of graphic novels I think this would be a good one for readers new to the genre.
