STORY-LINE OUT OF THE SHADOWS BY EMMA CARRIE:

Detective Victoria Tacket, a driven detective in Golden City, New York and Emily Brelin, a teen on the run from a monster, feature in Out Of The Shadows. Emily's running from the General, who trained her as an assassin. When Victoria's friend, Jen, dies she's floored; and to top it off, Jen ask her to take guardianship of Emily. What does she know about raising and mentoring a kid? After all, she has issues of her own she can't face and resolve. She's not mother material.

Victoria decides to let CPS take the care of her. Unbeknownst to Victoria, Emily, over-hearing her decision, runs from the conference room where Victoria left her to wait. The CPS agent, an incompetent piece of work, gives Victoria a letter from Jen; asking Victoria to take guardianship or let Emily go as she's safer on the streets where her unanimity's protected. Knowing she has already contacted missing persons to place Emily's photo and information on the street, she races to erase all trace of Emily from the police system.

This begins the story of the relationship between Victoria and Emily. Victoria knows she must find Emily and keep her safe. From what or who, she doesn't know; after reading Jen's letter she knows it must be bad . The race is on to find Emily and persuade her she wants to take over guardianship, and protect her from the threats on the street of Golden City, New York. My review of Out Of The Shadows follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Author Emma Carrie filled Out Of The Shadows with action, suspense, and mystery. Book 1 of the Tackett Series, I found Out Of The Shadows a solid story. Carrie kept the suspense at high peak and revealed just the correct amount to whet our appetites for the series. Although a short read of 162 pages, I found I this book engrossing from the first pages and became engaged with the characters. What is Victoria's secret which Carrie eludes to? She gives hints, but leaves the answers for later books. Giving just enough detail of Emily's former life to make me run and buy the next book, I found I loved this story.

Carrie developed her characters skillfully, and with a fast pace, filled with action and emotion, I found the plot intriguing and look forward to reading this series. She kept the suspense and mystery at high peak. I was not prepared for the surprise near the end of the book; Carrie reveals Emily secrets and why the General wants her so bad. I found her writing clear and easy to follow with scenes which transitioned smoothly; a perfect read for a lazy afternoon. Without the use of fluff or sex to fill the pages, Carrie created a solid story; this is a clean book. I would not hesitate to buy this book for myself or a friend.

Out of the Shadows, a novella by Emma Carrie, is a story about a teenage girl who is on the run from her “handler,” a man from her past. She had found refuge with a college professor, but when the professor dies from cancer, the mysterious girl, Emily, is on her own again. It was the dying professor’s wish that her best friend, Detective Victoria Tackett, would take Emily in because they would be good for each other. Throughout the story, Emily is on the run, but trying to borrow the letter that the professor had written to Tackett.
The story is well-written, and the mystery of Emily is interesting from the sense that I wanted to know what has happened to this girl, and why is she on the run, which is gradually revealed with veiled references to the man who is trying to find her. This novella is the first in a series, and I want to find out Emily’s story as her relationship to Detective Tackett grows and more about her past that has put her in danger. I think the story has promise as it continues to unfold; however, I did find this installment a little slow throughout the first forty to fifty pages, which made it difficult to keep my attention at times. The story’s action did pick up, which motivated me to invest myself more into it by the time I finished reading. I think that one thing that could have been improved would have been adding the antagonist to the story rather than just making vague references to him. I am confident he will show up in future novellas in the series, but the threat in this story didn’t seem to have a strong enough impact.
Although I had some minor issues as mentioned above, I still think this is a good story and has much potential as it continues to develop in the planned sequels. I do want to read the other novellas in the series as they become available.
