Excellent, informative, with beautiful pictures and manageable bites of text. A quiz and a glossary at the end, notes, weird facts and jokes throughout, it is a very enjoyable read. Highly recommended for A2/Flyers students. This is level 3 (Fluent reader) of the National Geographic Kids Readers, but there are four lower levels, and 'Chapters' for more advanced readers as well.

Filled with facts and photos, this text aims to grab the reader’s attention. The larger type size and colorful text bubbles usher the reader from page to page of fascinating information on frogs. Includes table of contents, brief visual glossary.

This book is really in depth about bats and provides information about things like what they eat, how they help the environment, and where they are found. I think this book could be read by older primary students but younger primary students may have to have help or have it read to them. It has large print and lots of pictures but there are some lengthy paragraphs that I think could be intimidating to younger primary students but is a little too simple for intermediate ages. Overall I just think all informational texts could just be really helpful to students who only enjoy reading things they are interested in - so if a student I have loves bats this would be the perfect book to get them to start reading!

This book would be appropriate for primary readers. It is a non-fiction early reader that teaches facts about mars and the space program. It would be great for units on space, STEAM units, or other science lessons.½

Although this book doesn't have chapters per se, it is the same length of an early chapter book. It would be a good read for primary, but better for intermediate readers. This is because the colors on the pages make the words harper to see and there are more word in the book. The book has fun facts and evidence to support the content being shared.

This is a good choice for libraries looking to update their solar system bookshelves with a book on Mars that covers developments through 2016. It is a fun and comprehensive introduction to Mars and Mars exploration, featuring lots of topics of current interest (astrobiology, the search for present and past water) as well as up-to-date summaries of the latest Mars explorers. There's a two-page spread on Curiosity, followed by a pages on planetary protection, several on what we have to do to prepare for human exploration, and a final spread on terraforming.

The National Geographic Kids reader the Planets by Elizabeth Carney is a great read about planets and scientific technology we use to see and explore planets. It is a great read for second graders with easy words to comprehend and lots of interesting facts and information. I love how this book could be used to either introduce the readers to features of informational texts through a read aloud or to reinforce and provide practice for kids to use those features will reading an informational text independently. The features of text presented in the book are a table of contents, vocabulary words and definitions, subtitles, visual supports, page numbers, questions about the information, and real life connects. I would definitely use this text in any of the two ways mentioned above and I would for sure keep this text in my room. This is a great way to get students familiar with informational text as well as learn information about planets.

This book is great for a read-aloud or an independent informative read. This book includes many great pictures, engaging side comments such as jokes, questions, and informative fun facts. I would use this book because it connects to students' lives and informs them how scientists explore the solar system. This book includes information about what a planet is, and information about planets such as the sun, our solar system, the inner planets, our planet earth, the gas giants, dwarf planets, more amazing planets, moons, as well as our moon. It also includes a fun activity at the end where readers could test their parents' knowledge.

I would use this book in my classroom. The book includes a lot of specific information about Mars that students who like space exploration would enjoy. Also, Mars is showing up more often in the news because of SpaceX and the implications of living on Mars. I think it would be cool to have this book so that students could learn more about the history of Mars exploration, as well as why living in Mars would be so difficult.

I like this book because it tells the reader everything about bats and I feel that most children view bats as cool/intriguing animals. It teaches children vocabulary specific to bats, their anatomy, habitat, niche, etc. Also, it includes the phonetic spelling of tier 3 words to help with pronunciation. This book could be used in a guided reading discussion or a research project.

Summary: I was surprised by how much information this book has about bats from what they eat to how they sleep. the reader learns about their habitats, nocturnal nature, and their amazing sense of hearing and how they use it to fly at night.

Personal Reaction: I now like bats! I was intrigued by all the different kinds of bats and what set them apart. Learning bats use a type of sonar that bounces off objects to know what is around them is pretty awesome! Great photos but it is National Geographic!

Classroom extension: Ask the children if any of them were scared of bats but now understand then better and why? Ask the children to pick one species of bat to draw. Read this around Halloween to show they aren't just made up creatures but that some beliefs about them are made up.
