Alexander V. Campbell

This is best regarded as a thorough debunking of the mythology that has grown up around this unit over time as while Campbell doesn't find a particularly elite unit of frontier rangers (that better describes Thomas Gage's 80th Foot), he also doesn't find a unit that was particularly abrasive in its dealings with either the First Nations or North American colonists. In fact, Campbell argues that the mixed Anglo-German nature of the unit gave it a certain virtue as appearing less alien to colonial society and contributed to its value as an instrument of economic and social development over time.
