Jonathan Call

The story keeps you on your toes a short way into the book, rooting for the protagonist to solve the twists and turns of the mystery of which he's found himself caught in the middle. The book is well-written; we readers are spoken to in prose about the accounts of the mystery as if Buck is speaking to his protégés and we need to pay attention to the details since all of the clues are cleverly revealed right from the start and only realised later in the story.

The story takes place over a month after Where There's Smoke, carrying on after the events Buck endured. These books work as standalones; however, it helps to read the previous book to catch up. The story is personal to Buck, so there is a shift in his demeanour. He is a bit more shameless and humorous than usual, and ready to face any consequences for which he might be responsible, contrary to that of his usual alertness. He experienced the worst, and now he wants answers. The story is gritty and at times grim.
