Eine tote junge Frau wird in Bischkek (Kirgisistan) im Schnee gefunden. Ihr Bauch wurde aufgeschnitten und ein Fötus hineingelegt. Obwohl es ähnliche Fälle im ganzen Land gibt, ist dieser Fall besonders brisant, denn die Tote ist die Tochter des Staatssicherheitschefs. Kein einfacher Fall für Inspektor Borubaew, denn ihm werden doch einige Steine in den Weg gelegt.
Die Geschichte spielt an einem ungewöhnlichen Ort, die uns doch sehr fremd erscheint. Es ist nicht nur die unfreundliche Umgebung in dieser klirrenden Kälte, die einen schaudern lässt, auch die Brutalität der Morde ist nichts für zart besaitete Leser.
Während Inspektor Borubaew noch zweifelt, ob er seine Frau Tschinara in ihrem letzten Kampf gegen den Krebs genügend unterstützt hat, muss er seine Ermittlungen führen. Dies macht er auf eine verbissene Art, rücksichtslos gegenüber allen, auch gegenüber sich selbst. Wenn die offiziellen Wege nicht mehr möglich sind, müssen eben die inoffiziellen Wege beschritten werden. Unterstützt wird er dabei von der undurchsichtigen Saltanat vom usbekischen Geheimdienst und einem Onkel seiner Frau.
Es ist eine schwer zu durchschauende Geschichte, bei der kaum auszumachen ist, wer Feind oder Freund ist. Es gibt sehr viele Themen, die in die Story hineinspielen: Korruption, Zwangsprostitution, Drogen, Machtspiele, Bandenkriege. In dieser Welt von Macht und Gewalt kommt es auf ein paar Tote nicht an.
Die Geschichte ist von Anfang an spannend und fesselt bis zum Ende.

‘A Killing Winter’ is an intense and unforgivingly dark detective novel set in Kyrgyzstan. After only a couple chapters it drew me into the setting. I wanted to know about Kyrgyzstan and its people. The writing is clear and direct, like the principal character. However, there are these occasional metaphors describing the land or the people that are so beautifully written that they grab and hold your attention; you pause, re-read them, and feel the despair of this place even more because you understand the beauty covered by loss and hopelessness.… (más)

It's a detective novel set in Kyrgyzstan, mostly in the capital, Bishkek, but with excursions to Osh, the second city, and to the Chinese border. The narrator, Inspector Akyl Borobaev, has recently lost his wife to cancer, and is brought in to solve the gruesome murder of the daughter of the Minister for State Security. There is a lot of very good circumstantial detail of the human and physical geography of Kyrgyzstan, a country of which I know very little, and the various characters (all deeply unpleasant, apart from a glamorous Uzbek security agent) are very vividly depicted. I was less convinced by the revelation of the villain's identity; I did not quite get the means or motivation. Still, an interesting change. Apparently the first of a series, though not sure how energetically I will seek out the rest.… (más)
