Koos Breukel

The series of portraits of Michael Matthews might almost be described as a manifesto, so strong are the lines of force prefiguring Koos Breukel's later work. He originally responded to a request from Matthews, an HIV-positive poet and performer who saw these photographic sessions as his last performance before his death. These are sombre images of dry, dark, cracked skin, of the pure lines of a delicate bone structure, capturing the light falling on the ultimate beauty of a changing human body from which Koos was to make an artwork in its own right - with the little book composed by Willem van Zoetendaal forming its delicate yet powerful punctuation. ME, WE was the full text of the improvised poem that Muhammad Ali delivered to a crowd of Harvard students in 1975. It can be interpreted as a cheerful tribute to life, expressing unity and at the same time individuality. Dutch photographer Koos Breukel (1962) chose it as the title for this book that assembles portraits from the first 30 years of his career, focusing on the circle of life: be born, grow up, develop and express yourself, love, suffer, and die. Koos Breukel is a portraitist of farmers and artists, newborn babies and politicians, the sick and the old. ME WE, with a poignant contribution by the prize-winning author Erwin Mortier, is Breukel's mid-career retrospective as well as his homage to life.… (más)

In de zomer van 2003 zette de fotograaf Koos Breukel zijn tent op in de achtertuin van de Eerste Bergensche Boekhandel, niet om in te kamperen, maar bij wijze van mobiele fotostudio. De tuin ligt aan de Bergense Eeuwigelaan, de weg naar zee waar in 1967 de legendarische vrouwenfotograaf Sanne Sannes zich tegen een boom te pletter reed. Als eerbetoon aan Sannes wilde Breukel de dames van de Eeuwigelaan portretteren. Maar zoals vaker bij Breukels ondernemingen ging ook dit project een eigen leven leiden.
De werkomstandigheden waren ideaal. Het was prachtig weer, zodat de foto’s in de lommerrijke tuin gemaakt konden worden; de samenwerking met Karien Hilbers en Thomas Swinkels van de boekhandel verliep onberispelijk; de winkel stond borg voor een gestage aanvoer van potentiële modellen en tijdens de laatste twee dagen van deze idylle kreeg de fotograaf gezelschap van de tekenaar Manuel Kurpershoek. Terwijl Breukel zijn foto’s maakte, tekende Kurpershoek vlug en vaardig fraaie portretjes van de modellen.

De uitkomst van deze werkperiode verraste Hilbers en Swinkels aangenaam en zij besloten de resultaten te bundelen in een boekje. De publicatie lijkt in haar uiterlijk een soort echo van Breukels monografie (van uitgeverij Basalt) uit 2000. Maar de ‘Eeuwige tuin’, zoals de titel van dit boekje luidt, is geen ‘Photo Studio Koos Breukel – de dependance’, want de tekeningen en foto’s zijn hier even belangrijk. Het gedicht Bergen NH – Eeuwigelaan van Han Tentije (een eerder geschreven in memoriam Sanne Sannes) completeert deze fijnzinnige uitgave.… (más)
