This an historical novel set in the Ohio Valley shortly after the American Revolution. The settlers are moving into the Valley in search of new land to claim and clear. Of course this leads to conflict with the Shawnee Indians.

When Cam Galway prevents an Indian massacre of the occupants of a river boat, he finds himself accused of murder for he had to kill the white man who was leading the attack. He also meets the betrothed of his main accuser, Lieutenant Richard Thornwood who makes an immediate impression on him. Cam also has been a slave of the Shawnee and during that time created a child with an Indian maid.

The author creats a violent frontier with whites murdering natives and the natives doing the same. He also spends considerable time giving the reader the background on the culture of the Shawnee.
