This book is set three hundred years in the future but since environmental damage has taken away most technology, this didn’t seem particularly futuristic (maybe the other books set in the same universe lend themselves better to showcasing the time period, I don’t know). This felt like it could have just as easily taken place anywhere from the 1950’s to the 90’s, which I didn’t mind, but for taking place three hundred years from now, I guess I felt like three hundred years into the future we’d either have come a bit further or severely regressed, not just kind of stayed in a similar place as far as attitudes towards different sexualities and races.
But keeping those attitudes somewhat similar to now probably does give this a relevancy for the intended young audience, giving them a character whose struggles some of them may identify with, and making a kid feel less alone is never a bad thing for a book to do.
I’m not the biggest action fan in the world, emotion tends to stand out more for me, so my favorite aspect of this book was the family, in particular the arc of the relationship between these brothers, the ups and downs of their attempts to reconnect, I thought that played out at a believable pace.… (más)
