Essays on literature, society, and religion written in the late 1800's by the "sage writer", Matthew Arnold. He wrote with the intention to instruct and chastise the reader. With Tennyson and Robert Browning, one of the three great Victorian poets. Considered a great liberal in his day, and this work shows an infusion of science, inquiry, and democracy into the manners and culture of the more favored few.
