- Countess Marie von Bothmer, née Young, was born in London, the daughter of a merchant. In 1856, she married Major Count Hippolyt von Bothmer, a German diplomat, with whom she had two children. The countess wrote the popular book German Home Life (1876) as well as biographies such as The Sovereign Ladies of Europe (1899) and four novels.
