"...In his preface, Blount acknowledges the use of words by earlier lexicographers, including Minsheu, Cotgrave, Scapula, Rider, Florio, Cowles, etc., and thus becomes the first English lexicographer to cite authorities consulted. He is also the first lexicographer 'of a purely English dictionary to attempt an etymology of words' (see Starnes & Noyes, p. 46). The work was later revised and enlarged by William Nelson in 1717, and adopted by Edward Phillips in his 'New World of English Words,' published the following year. Alston V. 48."
