Canada, situational-humor, verbal-humor, law-enforcement, amateur-sleuth, small-business, small-town, cosy-mystery*****

Verity Hawkes lives in a village in Canada, has an inherited small landscaping business, a fiance who is a police detective, an interesting aunt who may or may not still work for a corporate espionage agency, and a burgeoning talent for sleuthing. She also has a friend whose goat is accused of murdering the owner of the local septic removal driver by butting him into an empty septic tank (which would have been amazing considering the narrow opening). The plot keeps getting more convoluted and funnier at the same time! I loved it! I think it could stand alone, but it would make me want to read any I'd missed just for the fun of it!

A missing aunt, a suspicious entity with technology in the basement, a probable kidnapping with the ransom money disappearing along with the banker, trouble for both our protagonist and her police detective boyfriend, and good friend who really do try to help. The publisher's blurb gives a good hook but doesn't give a clue as to the fun. I like the audios and Petrea Burchard really knows how to be a fantastic narrator!… (más)

I loved it! Verity is a young widow with a lot of emotional baggage and has been transplanted from the West Coast of Canada to the Falls area near the US border. She has a house that has some strange secrets, a missing aunt, a few good friends, and a strong tendency to snoop/sleuth. I think it's a great story and there's some real laughs, too!
In the 3 years since I read the first book in the series I have had more vision issues and can do best with books that TTS (dear robot reader) or audiobooks. That being said, I think that Petrea Burchard is excellent! Great separation of characters who really are and interpretation of their feelings.… (más)
