This book was originally published in 1806 by an English rector,James Beresford.Despite its title,it really is one of the funniest books that I have come across and I defy anyone to read it without laughing at one point or another.
This new abridged edition, edited by Michelle Lovric is full of Miseries - of the body,of the table,of the bed-chamber,of travelling,of reading and of writing ect.
In the latter section we find 'Reading over a passage in a author,for the hundredth time,without coming an inch nearer to the meaning of it;then passing over it in despair,but without being able to enjoy the rest of the book,from the painful consciousness of your own real or supposed stupidity.' Again - 'Walking,at great haste,through a narrow,dirty street,behind a fat person'.… (más)
