This book gave a deep analysis of what Frederick Douglass had accomplished in his life. From escaping slavery and later helping free slaves to becoming close with President Abraham Lincoln. I would recommend this book to Social Studies teacher who are on the topic of the Emancipation Proclamation and Congress passing laws for African American rights. I enjoyed reading this book because I enjoy reading about our history.

Frederick Douglass was a unique slave because he could read and write. This book focuses not only on this outstanding accomplishment, but it also gives an overview of the fight against slavery. Frederick was bought, traded, and abused, but he was always hopeful that he would one day he would become a free black man. His dreams came true in 1838 when he finally escaped to the North to New York City. There he started speaking out against slavery, attempting to educate people on the raw reality of slavery. Amazingly, he became a friend of President Lincoln. Indirectly, Douglass influenced the president to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Even after this giant milestone, Douglass still pushed for blacks to get into the army, help with their expenses, and voting rights. He knew that this was a great step in the right direction, but the war against slavery would continue. This book, compared to "Young Frederick Douglass: The Slave Who Learned to Read" finishes the story of the hard work he began. I feel like I have been on a journey with him throughout his life. Both these books paint the story of his challenging life.… (más)

From the time Frederick Douglass was a young child, he was a natural activist. From being a born a slave, to a runaway, to finally being a free man, Douglass never gave up on his dream. Having realized the cruelty of slavery at a young age, Douglass was often times rebellious and because of that he suffered many beatings. Frederick Douglass is known for his part in the civil rights movement. He taught himself to read and write and because of that he was a phenomenal speaker. He traveled throughout America, Britain, and Ireland speaking at meetings about the hardships of slavery. Everywhere he spoke, people were touched by his words. He made a huge impact on people and his role in making slavery illegal was tremendous. Not only did Douglass speak out against slavery, but he also fought for equality. He spoke out against two bills that would give African Americans medical, financial, and educational help. The second bill was to give black citizen rights. Douglass has a great story to tell and one that children should learn about. Unfortunately, this book probably wouldn’t do well with children. This book added too many facts about Douglass that it can come off as boring. What I did like about this book is the random educational pages that stray away from the biography. There were multiple times in the book that author put in pages that give you a better understanding of the fight against slavery. These pages had small commentary about things like The African Slave Trade and The Fugitive Slave Law.From the time Frederick Douglass was a young child, he was a natural activist. This is an extremely detailed look into the life of Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey and how he came to be the powerful man he was. His life began on the slave plantation of Captain Aaron Anthony where his family was located. The children on the plantation were never dressed properly so they were usually cold, and there wasn’t enough food to go around. Frederick was independent and had a bad habit of talking back to adults. Later he was sent to work with Hugh Auld where he was taught to read by his wife. Readers learn that while he worked, Frederick was allowed to attend meetings held by free blacks. Aiming for a successful freedom attempt, Frederick borrowed papers to take the train to New York. He met a sailor there that introduced him to David Ruggles. He was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Frederick Douglass decided it was time to speak up for the enslaved black community. His speeches brought on instant followers, which was not idea for someone who had run away from his master. He ran away to England where he got more people to join the cause. His new European friends earned enough money to buy his freedom. He continued to fight against slavery and encouraged others to do the same. He went on to create an even bigger name for himself and influenced thousands of people.

Details: This book was written for students in grades 3-6 and is on a 5.6 reading level.
