Biografía breve
Minister, song writer, president of Arkansas College, and author of the biographies of Knowles Shaw and Walter Scott. He graduated at Bethany College in 1945.

William Baxter (1820-1880) is on the Tiers' Portraiture. He was a fine writer and his biography of Walter Scott (1874) was the only one written for many years. He also wrote a biography of Knowles Shaw titled, "The Singing Evangelist." (1879). Baxter was also a very fine poet...Perhaps Baxter's most popular book today is "Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove; or, Scenes and Incidents of the War in Arkansas." (1864). ---Terry Gardner

This book is an easy read of one of the most prolific 19th century songwriter and evangelist of the Disciples of Christ. Born in Ohio but raised in Indiana, Knowles Shaw (1834-1878) became a Christian in his late teens and quickly became a gospel minister. He preached as an evangelist in the Midwestern and Southern states, but mainly in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, Texas, and Mississippi. He is most famous for writing the hymn, "Bringing In the Sheaves," but he wrote many more. He also is said to have baptized over 11,000 persons into Christ throughout his ministry.

He perished in a train wreck in Texas after conducting a successful protracted meeting in Dallas. He is buried in Rushville, Indiana.

Persons who are interested in learning about early preachers associated with the Stone-Campbell religious heritage may find this book to be of interest and perhaps an inspiration.

I have a searchable PDF copy of this book, which is available online at no charge. There is no index.
