This translation sticks closely to the original German text. Thus Bauer's First World War reminiscences and contemporary political rhetoric remain. The 1929 and 1931 attempts on this mountain were carried out with admirable German efficiency. Details such as Bauer's use of snow caves and lightweight equipment make one believe that, had the weather co-operated, these men would have reached the summit. Strangely, this book was awarded a gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1932!

The book details Bauer's development as a mountaineer, the 1929 and 1931 attempts on Kanchenjunga, and the 1936 success on Siniolchu. Much of this had already been covered in Bauer's "Himalayan Campaign" published in English in 1937. This 1955 book, with a patronizing forward by Hunt, was a post-Everest call to renew attempts on the as-yet unclimbed Kanchenjunga. Bauer has added contemporary comment to Sumner Austin's translation, in which he makes reference to the events of both wars and his involvement therein.
Bauer's writing style has a clarity which energized me. I found the methodical approach of these German expeditions refreshing. Additionally, the respect in which the German climbers held their porters is much more in keeping with modern attitudes than their British contemporaries. The techniques used by these expeditions were surprisingly advanced.
I would consider this essential reading for scholars of twentieth century Mountaineering. As a bonus the reader will enjoy a delightful and entertaining book.
