Excellent play from the 1930s, dealing with love, infatuation, honor, and self-esteem, from the playwright of HOLIDAY and THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. Not as comedic as those plays, THE ANIMAL KINGDOM is still a worthy example of a fine play from the period. It deals with a man who has two women in love with him, one who wants him to be the best version of himself possible, the other who wants him to be a success financially and socially without regard to his dreams. While the proper choice may seem obvious, playwright Philip Barry makes the man's dilemma seem quite authentic. Leslie Howard starred in the play on Broadway and also in the film version.
