- Arvède Barine was the pen name of Madame Charles Vincens, born Louise-Cécile Bouffé in La Rochelle, France. She wrote historical works and literary biographies, some of which were translated into English, including several books on Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans, duchesse de Montpensier, known as La Grande Mademoiselle; Alfred de Musset; and George Sand. She also contributed articles to numerous periodicals, including la Revue bleue, la Revue des Deux Mondes, Le Figaro, and la Revue de Paris. She focused mostly on the subject of women, but also wrote about travel, political issues of the day, book reviews, and literary criticism. She won the Prix Vitet from the Académie française in 1894 and the Prix Estrade-Delcros of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques in 1903. She was one of the first members of the jury of the Prix Femina in 1905.
