rabck from Asian bookbox; I never thought about where Asian Indians migrate to, and the difficulties they encounter. The story focuses on Uncle Avtar, who emigrates by himself to California and finally settles in Oak Grove, starting a farm. And his niece, Jeeto, who wants to forsake the Indian community and arranged marriages and just go to college. Interesting times with Avtar becoming a migrant worker, lumped in with the Mexicans because of his brown skin, and not knowing the language. Finally he is "rescued" by Mohta Singh. But then events force them apart - and even the Indian women don't know the story. Nice how the stories interweave with each other.½
