According to research conducted by Linda Babcock at the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management, men initiate negotiations about four times as frequently as women do. The difference in opportunity and salary could add up to over $1 million in a lifetime between similarly skilled men and women. In their first book, Women Don't Ask Babcock and journalist Sara Laschever discusses their findings on this matter, concluding that the trained behavoir of women to not negotiate needs desperately to be changed. So, Babcock and Laschever have used their new book, Ask For It to develop a four-phase program to discuss the problem and train women in negotiation tactics. Although an attentive reader might note that the theory is a little simplified and the 'four step program' routine and familiar for self-help books, the content of the book remains valuable. Any step that can be made in equalizing gender opportunities in the workforce is important. The book concentrates on a specific problem, women's negotiation, and offers a method by which each individual women who reads the book can create a solution. I would recommend reading it.
