The oldest cliche of short-story writing is "novels are about characters; short stories are about situations", but it's no less true for a' that, and Stancek (whom I have had several very pleasant encounters with dans le Salon) whips up a situation that leaves you with a gift, in this vignette about a boy in Bratislava visiting a magic show with his dad. That gift being the open, unresolved optimism that it leaves you with: Magic, affirmation, hope for a bright cool future. Read this for an understated pick-me-up.½
